A checkered flag (or chequered flag) is displayed at the start/finish line to indicate that a race is officially finished. It was first used in 1906 by race officials who were called ‘checkers’. NASCAR traditionally has a special version of a chequered flag sewn for Victory Lane that has the name and date of the race on it, a practice that is also used at the Indianapolis 500.
