Giant Pandas are closely related to bears, but they do have some unique qualities. For example, although they have the digestive systems of carnivores, they eat bamboo almost exclusively. Giant Pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian came to live at the Smithsonian National Zoo in December 2000. On loan from China, the Zoo contributed funds and expertise toward conservation efforts in China. In November 2023, Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and 3-year-old cub Xiao Qi Ji departed from the zoo, and as of December 2023, the pandas are housed at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda’s ShenShuPing Campus in Wolong. They are symbols of wildlife conservation.
