Rhyolite is an igneous rock, a volcanic rock that bears a resemblance to some types of granite. The name itself is derived from the Greek word rhyax, meaning a stream of lava. In North American prehistoric times, rhyolite was quarried extensively in eastern Pennsylvania. It kept a sharp point when struck and was used to make spear points and arrowheads.
