Cardinals are such beloved birds in the U.S. that they’ve been chosen as the state bird in 7 states! Couples work together to build their nests, with the male gathering building materials to pass along to the female, who does the actual building. Cardinal couples often seem to be kissing, but the male is actually feeding the female seeds while she protects their eggs. They work side by side to feed their young once they’ve hatched. Cardinals have been seen cooperating with robins when teaching their youngsters to fly. The two species will also work together in attacking a predator bird marauding one of their nests.
