The word ‘turquoise’ dates to the 17th century and is derived from the French word for “Turks” because the mineral was first brought to Europe from Turkey.  In the U.S., the word turquoise is synonymous with a sky blue color, although the mineral itself can range in color from shades of green, yellow and blue.
